During Construction the Contractor was very impressed with the quality of the SCR & its workability during construction.

After 7 years there are no signs of deterioration. This is no small feat in our climate with the large amount of road salt applied during our harsh winters.

The contractors and final users had saved almost £500 000 on the project by using stainless clad instead of galvanised rebar. Galvanised rebar would have been very difficult and more expensive to fabricate into the 3 circular segments required for the hoops involved as double coating/handling charges would have been incurred. Furthermore part of these savings had been realised by reducing concrete cover with the stainless clad.
— Mr David Grey, Technical Director of Stainless UK on placing an order of 154 tons of stainless clad rebar for a reinforced concrete high pressure water tunnel in 2001. He pointed out further that he saw the stainless clad rebar's position in the UK market filling the gap between galvanised and epoxy of around 50 000 tons/year and solid stainless rebar of around 2000 - 3 000 tons/year.

Slabs Reinforced With 316 Solid and Clad (SCR) Stainless Bars:

Thus, for the standard specimen simulated deck slab configuration the reinforcement types rank from best to worst, as:

The stainless clad rebar is potentially the most significant development in corrosion control of reinforcing steel that I have seen in my 31 year career.
— Written comment to A. Cacace in 2001 by Mr Rod Powers, Florida Department of Transportation's State Corrosion Engineer, on the stainless clad rebar

Because of the toughness of the cladding, no cracks or other form of damage on the cladding of the installed bars was visually observed. Thus, it is expected that the cladding will provide very good protection to the bars against corrosion. In contrast, damage to the epoxy coating was easily observed on many of the epoxy coated bars installed on the other spans despite their good condition before placement.

Further, the experience convinced me that the best approach to eliminating this costly problem of reinforcing bars corrosion is to prevent it from occurring in the first place, by using bars with significantly better corrosion resistance in all new constructions such as stainless steel or stainless steel clad reinforcing bars.
— INDEPENDENT EXPERT’S OPINION ON THE STAINLESS STEEL CLAD REINFORCING BAR By Gerardo Clemena - 20th June 2010

SCR with isolated ends or terminated with either a SS cap or welding overlay had high corrosion resistance in liquid solution with extremely high chloride levels (~5M Cl-). SCR with isolated ends or terminated with a SS cap remained passive in concrete with up to 8% Cl- by weight of cement for about 1 year.
